Is There An Answer To Does Chocolate Cause Acne?
'Does chocolate cause acne?' is a question close to my heart, as someone who
is both a self-confessed chocolate addict and who also suffers from acne.
I had it worse when I was younger, but now as I turn 40 I can still get acne and
spots the size of small mountains, so I did some research into the alleged and well
touted connection between chocolate and acne.
The short answer is that chocolate doesn't cause acne.
This is based on what acne actually is, how it starts, and then seeing if chocolate
can be a cause.
Acne stems from the sebaceous glands in the skin. They produce an oily substance
called sebum, which travels up to the skin via the hair follicles. It then keeps the
skin moisturized and supple. This procedure takes dead cells off the inside of the
follicle.
If the dead cells are not taken off, or don't exit properly, which can be due to the
pore being blocked on the surface, there will be a build up of sebum below the skin.
This is a fertile growing zone for a bacteria which normally helps the skin, but when
combined with the sebum, it breaks down into free fatty acids, which are then
attacked by the white cells in our blood.
It's this little 'war' between the white blood cells and the bacteria/sebum
combination which causes the acne.
Sometimes an over production of sebum can lead to this build up, and this
production is controlled by the testosterone hormone.

Once we understand this process, we can see that the eating of chocolate does not
have any effect on the process, because it doesn't cause any increase in sebum
production.
Maybe if we made the chocolate into a face mask and wore it until our pores were
blocked, then it might have some effect, but by eating it? No.
There have been scientific studies to confirm this, giving some test cases chocolate
and others none, etc.
There are plenty of stories about people having a connection between eating
chocolate and having acne, but there is yet to be any scientific/medical proof of it.
Good news for a chocoholic like me, because now when I ask myself 'does
chocolate cause acne?' I can say no, and take another bite!
