    Hi There,

    I hope all is well with you today.

    Of course one thing about the start of a new year, is that it's
    time for all those various anniversaries to come round.

    Any anniversary ending in a zero is likely to be marked, and
    probably those ending in a five too.

    This weekend sees the 60th anniversary of the liberation of
    Auschwitz, where the Nazis killed over a million jews.

    There is a series on at the moment which documents what
    happened there, and how it came about.

    It combines eye witness accounts with photos and film.

    To say it's uncomfortable viewing is an understatement.

    The story is horrific, and the whole program is shocking.

    That's good.
    It's good that after 60 years the story is shocking.
    It should be.
    It's good that the story is still being told.
    It should be.

    The entire episode is an example of humankind at its' worst, but
    also leads to stories of humankind at its' very best.

    A lot of young people today, and I have spoken to a couple this
    week, say the subject is 'boring'.

    Boring?
    What, less boring say than watching hour after hour after of
    mindless soap opera?

    Ooh, if it was up to me, I'd strap them to the chair and force
    them to watch the Auschwitz documentary, and challenge them
    to call it boring after they'd seen it.

    How can we educate ourselves *without* acknowledging things
    like this from the past?

    If you happen to see any programs marking the 60th
    anniversary of this liberation, take the chance to watch it, and
    enjoy the freedom and abundance that we take for granted
    today.
