    The Great Gordino Newsletter - Issue 268 - Wed 15th Dec 2004
    ***************************************************

    Hi There,

I hope your week is going well.

    I went shopping this morning.
    Blimey that was an ordeal.

I'm not a big fan of shopping at the best of times, apart from
the calming oasis of the chocolate aisle, but even those are now
packed with Christmas shoppers desperate to spend their money
on walloping great big tins of sweets.

I must say that the queues were not as bad as I had feared, but
sure enough, there were still plenty of trolleys buckling under
their load to have me scratching my head.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, what is the big deal about
buying 10 loaves of bread before a holiday?
What exactly do people think is going to happen, and what do
they think they will achieve by having a sliced loaf handy?

In World War 2, people in the UK had little bomb shelters at the
bottom of their garden - am I missing something about the
    modern day threat?
Are we all supposed to build a sodding BAKER'S OVEN AT THE
    BOTTOM OF OUR GARDEN????

In its' latest home security advice, will the government say in an
emergency we should calm down, stay at home, and maybe
knock up a couple of rounds of toast?

I'm almost tempted to boycott bread between now and New Year
just on a point of principle.
Hmm, maybe that's going too far... you have to laugh though
    don't you!

We had an interesting couple of points about law and order last
    week here in the UK.

Does law and order have any relevance to goal achievement,
    self improvement and wealth creation?
    You betcha!

I want to be left alone to pursue my own path, to reap my own
rewards, and I want to be protected from the scum that thinks I
owe them a living, so yes it's relevant.

The government is proposing to clarify the law on homeowners
    protecting themselves against burglars.

At the moment, you are legally allowed to use 'reasonable force'
to defend yourself against an intruder, but depsite this, we are
seeing ever more ludicrous cases of burglars takng legal action
against homeowners who 'assault' them during attempted
    burglaries.

That would be laughable apart from the fact that the criminals
seem to be winning these cases.

    How ridiculous is that?
How about saying to the crook 'Here's a good way of not getting
hit over the head in someone else's home - stay out of them!!!'
They bleat on about their rights - er no, you waive those rights
when you intrude with the intent to steal.

Ooh, it's a blood boiler and woe betide anyone trying to burgle
me is all I can say, I'd probably get out a copy of my book and
    suggest they have a read!

The government is now proposing that you can use force 'as
long as it is not disproportionate to the intrusion'.

Ooh, that clears that up then!

The other week I talked about ID cards, which will be introduced
on a voluntary basis within a few years, and compulsory a few
    years after that.

This has been introduced by the Labour government, with the
Conservative opposition saying it will serve no purpose.

However, since it has long been a mainstay of Conservative
policy to be strong on law and order, with an election probably
next May, this week the Conservative leader has pledged his
    support for the scheme.

If he doesn't, the Prime Minister can claim the high water on that
subject come election time, so the Conservative leader had little
    choice.

    Interesting isn't it?
Sometimes our hand is forced by others.
We have to do things maybe earlier or differently to how we
would have planned, but hey, that's life, and to stick in the mud
and be stubborn can sometmes be counter-productive.
It's a judgement to be made, and it can't be ignored.

That's it for today, and here's the thought - are you stubborn
when you should be flexible, and do you have enough bread for
    Christmas?

    'Til Friday,
    Health and Happiness,
    Gordon
